Socioeconomic and cultural evaluations of natural resources

 

One of the major foci of C3’s work is the interactions of human societies with their natural resources.  We believe that successful conservation programmes are dependent on complete understanding and consideration of the needs of local communities.

 

We have partnered with SocMon western Indian Ocean and Pacific to conduct in-depth socioeconomic assessments of marine resource use in Comoros and Fiji. 

 

We have recently completed a substantial collaborative investigation funded by MASMA, headed by CORDIO East Africa, looking at socioeconomic effects of migrant fishers in the western Indian Ocean. 

 

MASMA also supported us to work with the Marine Conservation Society UK to study the trade in marine curios in Mauritius and Comoros. 

 

Local taboos and traditions can also be a useful tool in the management of natural resources and we have studied these issues in some depth in Comoros, Madagascar and Fiji.
