Conservation Programme Assistants – Fiji and Madagascar

C3 seeks conservationists holding postgraduate qualifications for 4 Programme Assistant posts, based at our Madagascar & Indian Ocean islands and Fiji and South Pacific islands offices.

Our programmes in both Indian Ocean and Pacific regions focus on integrating contemporary ecological and socio-economic research to ensure the human dimension is a primary consideration in biodiversity conservation practices. Understanding traditional knowledge and management practices and incorporating them into protected area planning is also a key to our community-based initiatives. Our areas of expertise are marine endangered species ecology and conservation, artisanal fisheries assessments and innovative financial incentive schemes for bycatch mitigation in coastal communities.  We train and manage small numbers of high calibre local and international graduate interns and Masters students throughout the year.

This international 3-6 month placement provides a unique opportunity for entry-level conservationists to gain insight into the reality of coastal and marine biodiversity management in a developing world setting within a reputable results-driven non-profit organization.

The Programme Assistant will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills in the following areas :

• socio-economic and ecological field research
• capacity-building for local partner institutions including government, non-government and educational institutions
• design and implementation of social marketing campaigns
• data analysis and technical report writing
• monitoring of local students projects
• field trip planning and budgeting
• assisting staff in managing international graduate interns

This position provides well-rounded practical experience ideal for building a career in the competitive field of international conservation.  Exceptional candidates will be considered for paid roles during and after completion of their placement.

The posts are voluntary and the candidate must be willing to cover their travel to the relevant programme office and medical insurance. Food, accommodation and project-related transport costs 300GBP/month.

Requirements :

• Masters degree in environmental/biological science/geography or related subject or equivalent experience
• 3 months experience working in a developing country, ideally in marine or coastal conservation
• Conversational French language ability desirable for Madagascar positions

C3 currently has vacancies for two Programme Officers (specializing in Research & Development and Field Support) for its expanding international programmes which focus on long-term coastal resource management initiatives.

Our work employs local environmental knowledge in combination with conventional scientific research and has a strong emphasis on community involvement and capacity-building.

Working closely with the national government, local and international research institutions and community groups, our programmes develop and implement sustainable actions for marine biodiversity conservation and economic development in marginalized regions.

Position Responsibilities

The C3 Programme Officer will be responsible for the management of the organization’s work in the relevant country/ies. S/he will work both independently and as a part of an international team depending on the particular assignment. Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:

1. management of the research, training, and outreach components of the programme
2. supervision of the work schedule for programme personnel and training local partners
3. administration and control of project budgets, ensuring that funds are spent appropriately and accounted for accordingly
4. production of the programme newsletter, awareness-raising and training materials
5. liaison with local partners
6. ensuring the health and safety of all personnel involved in the programme and the security of field equipment

Supervisory Responsibilities

The C3 Programme Officer will be responsible for the supervision of international interns, local students and personnel.

Working Conditions

The C3 Programme Officer will work standard British office hours at our Administrative HQ in Egypt although many assignments will require additional working hours or international travel to field sites in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Twenty days holiday per annum will be provided.

Contract Period

The initial contract period is for 12 months (extendable), beginning in March 2011, with the possibility of extension and/or promotion. The contract will begin with a probation period of three months.

Remuneration

The C3 Programme Officer shall be provided with a local salary, accommodation and project-related costs whilst working for the programme. The Programme Officer may also be entitled to performance-related bonuses.
