ASSESSING BYCATCH OF SEA TURTLES, MARINE MAMMALS AND SHARKS IN ARTISANAL FISHERIES

Little information exists regarding bycatch of marine mammals, turtles and cetaceans in artisanal fisheries throughout the western Indian Ocean region, despite the fact that it may comprise a significant threat to the status of populations of endangered species such as dugongs and sea turtles. C3-Madagascar is working to assess and quantify artisanal bycatch in terms of key species affected and spatial and temporal variation throughout the northern Diana region .
