C3 - COMORES

The Union of the Comoros (Comores in French) is a cluster of volcanic islands, to the west of Madagascar in the Mozambique Channel ; it provides a haven to numerous endemic and internationally threatened marine species including the coelacanth, humpback whale, dugong and sea turtles.

However, the Comoros' impressive biodiversity and range of habitats contrasts markedly with the islands’ poverty.  As with most island communities, fisheries are of considerable economic importance. Effective management of marine resources therefore is particularly important in the development of sustainable livelihoods and the elimination of poverty.  In addition, the rich biodiversity of the Comoros provides potential for the development of marine ecotourism.

C3 is working on a number of projects in the Comoros, in collaboration with local and international partners. Please click on a link on the left for more information.
