BP FUTURE CONSERVATIONIST AWARD
WINNERS 2006
C3 is very grateful to the BP Conservation Programme for funding our
project Operation Mohéli ; Linking Conservation of Flagship Species
with Sustainable Development. We were awarded
the Future Conservationist Award 2006 and we implemented this exciting project from June
2006 - June 2007.
Mohéli
Marine Park harbours internationally-significant nesting sites for
endangered sea turtles and one of the last havens for the vulnerable sea
cow. The Park is managed by ecogardes elected by each village but
there was a severe lack of technical and financial capacity which
was hindering conservation efforts. This project:
(i) gathered baseline data on these species and habitat and design
appropriate low-cost monitoring programmes;
(ii) provided training in surveying for the ecogardes and
(iii) analyzed opportunities for the currently under-exploited ecotourism
market, promoting these flagship species as a means to generate funds for
conservation and development on the island.
