MOHELI MARINE PARK

Created on 19th April 2001, Mohéli Marine Park is the first Marine Protected Area in the Comoros.  It is co-managed by local communities, and protected by a team of 10 ecogardes or rangers.  The Park covers 404 square km, extending from the coast to a depth of 100m. and protects important marine habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves.  From mid-July until the end of October, the Park is a major breeding ground for Humpback Whales.  Its beaches are one of the most important nesting sites in the Indian Ocean for Green Turtles.  The Park is also one of the last refuges in the Indian Ocean for the dugong, a species that C3 has been studying on Moheli since 2006  Unfortunately, the Comoros lack trained personnel to manage the Park and its resources.  C3 has been working to address this lack of capacity directly by providing training programmes for Mohéli's ecogardes and local communities.
